DescriptionA tour during which the secrets of the First World War will be revealed to you…
This tour follows the traces left by the First World War, and the high price paid by humanity for the era of rampant nationalism that preceded it…
Begin your journey at the House of Remembrance at Hermalle-sous-Argenteau, not far from the first “martyr town” in Belgium, Visé, which is the subject of your second visit. Then travel on to Loncin. After that moving visit, explore the Belgian masters of whisky distilling at the Belgian Owl Distillery. Then add a touch of the unusual by enjoying a tasty meal at the heart of Lantin Fort.
On the next day, you visit the Allied Memorial at Cointe, which overlooks the city of Liège.
Then experience the bitter-sweet flavours that characterise Belgian chocolate. Head to the Darcis chocolate factory to explore its incredible history. Before ending your day, enjoy walking around Spa, the original spa town, where you can explore the major events of history that created the town you can see today. Round off your day with a meal and a tasting of Belgo-Russian beer at L’Avouerie d’Anthisnes.
On the third day, you travel to the Baillet-Latour museum of wars in the Gaume region for an astonishing and amusing tour, after which you head to the Spincourt Forest to visit the Marguerre Camp and learn about the might of German artillery through the Duzey cannon.
After a good night’s sleep, enjoy a tour of the impressive Butte du Vauquois, which tells the story of the war in mines. Experience what it must have been like to have lived as a soldier in the Chattancourt trenches, and also at the Douaumont fort. After these emotional visits, you travel to the heart of a peaceful forest to explore the remains of the destroyed village of Fleuy, which bears witness to the atrocity and ferocity of artillery bombardments. Then climb up to the Eparges Ridge, with its memorial to the US First Army and scarred landscape which reminds us of the ferocious fighting, then to the Butte de Montsec, with its extraordinary views of the countryside. After all this effort, enjoy a visit to the comforting and pretty Braquier sugared almond factory in Verdun.
Your final day is spent exploring the delightful and historic town of Verdun before rounding off your tour with a visit to the impressive and famous Gros ouvrage de Fermont.
