The ultimate commemoration in the Greater Region
- 5 days
- 4 night
DescriptionCome face to face with the must-see places in the Land of Memory and travel through its rich and intriguing countryside
Your tour begins at Vaux Fort, located near Verdun, which gives you an idea of the intensity of the fighting in the Meuse region. Then you visit the Douaumont Ossuary, a symbol of Franco-German reconciliation. Then a climb up the butte du Vauquois, an almost completely preserved place bearing witness to the war of mines, after which you can reward your effort with some light relief in the form of a visit to the Braquier sugared almond factory in Verdun.
Your second day begins in Spincourt Forest, at the heart of the astonishing Marguerre camp, where the enormous Duzey cannon points proudly. Then you travel to the famous town of Bastogne to visit the Mardasson Memorial and the Bastogne War Museum.
You then cross the border into Luxembourg and are welcomed to the newly-renovated National Military History Museum at Diekirch. After a beer tasting at the National Brewing Museum at Wiltz, you head to the delightful town of Clervaux for an historical guided tour of the town and its castle, which houses the Battle of the Ardennes Museum.
Your fourth day starts at Troisvierges, where you follow in the footsteps of the local wartime smugglers of people and goods walking along the smugglers’ path across the frontier to Belgium, where you travel to the Baugnez 44 Historical Center, built on the site of a terrible massacre, to commemorate it. Then you won’t be scared by the sight of the “dragon’s teeth”, a set of defensive pyramid-shaped blocks of concrete, rising up in front of you.
Your final day begins with an historical guided tour of the pretty town of Spa, the original spa town where you went to take the waters, followed by some free time. Then an immersive historical experience at the impregnable Eben-Emael fort. You round off your tour in the “glowing city” of Liège for an emotional guided tour entitled “They fought for our freedom”.
