Experience the history of the Verdun battlefield!

The new Memorial’s trails place visitors at the heart of the battlefield.
The ground floor is dedicated to the experiences of the front-line troops.
On the first floor, visitors explore the environment of the battle and the contexts of the countries at war.

Then, from the terraces of the top floor, visitors can explore the battlefield.
Visitors can decipher the traces of the battle in the surrounding countryside. Remaining true to the original concept of the Memorial’s creators, the model of the 1916 battlegrounds remains at the centre of the tour.
Enclosed in a glass cage, a broken screen extends over 100 m².

An unusual audio-visuel show recreates the violence of the battle, with the convulsions of ground assaulted by artillery shells. It blends archive photos and works of art created by the troops who were there. In a series of raw timber display-cases are items used in the soldiers’ daily lives, modest and fragile evidence of their living conditions.

Further on are trucks and artillery guns used on the Sacred Way which remind us, in the roar of engines and animated archive images, of the logistics behind this gigantic battle.
In the final part of this first level, visitors enter an enclosed space buried under battlefield screens, where they can gain an intimate understanding of what it was like to be a soldier sheltering in a shell hole on the front line of the battle.
